2024 Data Insights: Who Seeks Sex Therapy
What I’ve Learned From My Practice
Sex therapy is a valuable resource for individuals and couples looking to improve their sexual health, navigate relationship challenges, or address specific sexual concerns.
But many people still wonder: Who typically seeks sex therapy, and how long does the process take?
Because I’m a giant nerd, I took a deep dive into the 2024 statistics from my practice to uncover some helpful insights. Here’s what I discovered:
📈 Age Trends: A Shift in Generations
Over the years, my client base has aged along with me, and this year was no exception. In 2024, I had ZERO clients in the 18-25 age range—a notable change.
The majority of my clients are now in the millennial and Gen X demographics. This trend highlights the growing importance of sexual wellness for people in midlife (and beyond), who are recognizing the value of therapy for addressing sexual concerns and relationship dynamics.
🏳️🌈 Sexual Diversity: Embracing Inclusivity
I’m proud to say that my practice serves a diverse range of sexual orientations, creating a safe and accepting environment for the LGBTQ community, kinky people, and non-monogamous folx. However, when it comes to race, there is still work to be done.
This year’s data serves as a powerful reminder to continuously evaluate how I can make my services more inclusive and accessible for individuals from all backgrounds. Ensuring that my therapy services are welcoming to everyone is a key priority for me moving forward.
⚖️The Gender Divide
While I deeply enjoy working with male clients, they remain outnumbered by cis women in my practice.
Interestingly, I've observed that men are more likely to seek therapy for sexual performance concerns. 🍆
This trend reinforces the importance of creating a space where men feel comfortable discussing their sexual health openly and without judgment.
⏳ Therapy Progress: Consistency is Key
The majority of my clients make progress within 20 sessions. This underscores the power of consistency in therapy, as well as the importance of building a strong therapeutic relationship.
While every client’s journey is unique, the overall trend suggests that meaningful progress can often be achieved in a relatively short time frame when there’s dedication and trust between therapist and client.
💑 Couples & Relationship Therapy: Growing Demand
There’s been a noticeable increase in couples seeking therapy in my practice, and I’m thrilled to be part of helping people strengthen their relationships. Whether it’s addressing intimacy issues, improving communication, or navigating changes in desire, relationship therapy has become a core part of my practice.
At the same time, I’m still deeply committed to offering 1:1 therapy, which allows individuals to focus on their personal growth, sexual health, and well-being.
💻 Virtual vs. In-Person: The Future of Therapy?
Although I offer in-person therapy, the majority of my clients—many of whom are local—prefer virtual sessions. Whether it’s the flexibility, convenience, or comfort of being at home, online therapy is here to stay.
It’s clear that the demand for virtual therapy is steady and is reshaping how therapy is delivered in the modern world.
Conclusion: Embracing Growth and Change
Sex therapy is a powerful tool for anyone looking to improve their sexual well-being, whether they’re facing specific challenges or seeking to improve their overall relationship dynamics.
My clients are diverse in age, gender, and sexual orientation, but they share a common goal: to feel more confident, connected, and empowered in their sexual and emotional lives.
Analyzing the 2024 data has been a valuable exercise in reflecting on progress made, and it offers a roadmap for continuous improvement in the year ahead.
Here’s to further growth and learning in 2025!
